The Varsity Girls Hockey team opened their season on Wednesday at the Everest Tournament. The girls came as defending champions and were looking to repeat.
In the first game, they took on host Everest Academy. Everest got out to a 1-0 lead but Avery Horst quickly tied the game. Everest would score late in the first period to take a 2-1 lead. However, future Princeton Tiger, Sarah Staley, tied the game at 2 with an absolute snipe, top shelf. However, CPC could not sustain the momentum with Everest coming back to take a 3-2 lead. Addi Adomatis shut the door in net down the stretch but CPC could not tie the game, falling to 0-1 in the tournament.
In the second game, CPC took on St. Martin's. The game was 0-0 most of the way with Addi making some key saves and she would eventually get her first shut out as a Lion. Avery Horst scored late in the game and then Sarah Staley potted an empty net so seal the victory.
Following a break, the Lions took on Bill Crothers in a must win to reach the gold medal game. Crothers scored early in the game but the Lions responded. Carrying the play for most of the game, CPC did everything but score. Eventually, Sarah scored again to tie the game. CPC continued to put the pressure on but could not get another goal, resulting in a 1-1 tie. This unfortunately, left CPC in the bronze medal game against St. Martins.
The girls struggled to regain the momentum in the bronze game, falling behind 1-0 early. Brynn Rice would tie the game but St Martins scored with 6 minutes left in the game and CPC could not come back again. While the girls were disappointed with the outcome, they look forward to getting their regular season going next week when they travel to take on Havergal.
