The Varsity Girls Hockey team traveled to Coburg this week to compete in the Girls A/AA OFSAA Tournament. This was the first time CPC had qualified for the tournament and the girls were pumped. CPC also came in as the #1 ranked team in the tournament
Tuesday stared against St. Thomas Aquinas from Kenora. The Lions got out to a 2-0 lead in the first and then roared to a 6-0 lead in the second. The Lions would add one more in the third to take game 1, 7-0. It was a complete team effort with 7 different goal scorers. In their second game of the day, the Lions continued their dominant play running away with a 6-0 victory. Lucy Terezievski scored 2 goals helping the lead the team to a 2-0 start which clinched them a spot in the quarter finals.
Wednesday morning was a different story. After dominating on Tuesday, the Lions faced a very determined St. Charles team from Sudbury. St Charles broke the ice with a goal midway through the second. The Lions did everything but score and eventually St. Charles scored again late in the third and would add an empty net, resulting in a 3-0 loss.
Not deterred, the Lions turned it around in the afternoon in the quarter finals when they took on the #2 ranked team, Holy Cross. Holy Cross had averaged 6 goals again in the round robin, but CPC shut the door. The girls put together one of their most complete games of the season with a 5-1 victory. Avah Sedore played amazing in goal and once again, the scoring was balanced with 5 different goal scorers. The win allowed CPC to advance to the final four on Thursday.
In the Semi Finals, CPC battled St. Michael CSS. It was a tight match as both teams were unable to find the back of the net in regulation and the score was 0-0 heading to overtime. Unfortunately, a bad bounce ended up resulting in St. Michael scoring early in overtime to defeat CPC.
The girls then had to rally for the Bronze Medal game that afternoon. Playing their 6th game in 3 days, the Lions mustered everything they had left against Lambton Central. Lambton scored in the second to lead 1-0 but Gem Winters roofed one to tie the game at 1. Lambton would quickly respond and take a 2-1 lead into the third. The Lions would not quit. Determined not to go home empty handed, Avery Horst scored with just under 7 minutes left to tie the game. For the second time in the day, the Lions would play overtime, which solved nothing resulting in a shootout. In the shootout, Gem Winters and Avery Horst each scored and Addi Adomaitis slammed the door in goal resulting in the Lions winning the shootout 2-0, the game 3-2, and the Bronze Medal. The coaches are incredibly proud of their effort and determination and can't wait for next season. Well done ladies!
